Disaster managers are people responsible for mitigation, monitoring and prevention of disasters. These professionals help ensure that the disasters can be prevented and if not prevented the loss to human life and overall loss can be minimized. India is a big country and due to its geological and geographical setup, it is prone to many disasters like earthquakes, floods, droughts, landslides, cyclones and avalanches etc. Also there are many other types of disasters like big accidents on land, air and water and industrial accidents. All these require disaster management.
What do disaster managers do?
Disaster managers are the trained people who are needed to deal with the situation before and after the disaster has occurred. They help in rehabilitation of people and settlement into normal life after the disaster. For better future disaster management these people give valuable suggestions based on their expertise and experience. Ministry of home affairs is responsible for disaster management in whole India while other departments/ ministries like railways, aviation are responsible for their own areas.
There are many institutions of repute that offer various programs in Disaster Management. The courses on offer are Certificate, Post Graduate Diploma, Master's and PhD. For certificate courses 10 + 2 students are eligible and for P.G. diploma and Master's Degree, bachelor's degree holders are eligible.
Although students from many fields usually join the disaster management course, sociology, social work, economics, public administration, psychology, geography, geology, meteorology and agriculture students opt for these more.

Government agencies are primarily responsible for disaster management in India, there are many disaster management authorities at central and state level and ministries that offer employment opportunity. A good career is also possible in various other setups like airports which have their own disaster management sections, big industries also employ disaster manager especially in industries that are prone. Many educational institutes involved in research in the field of disaster management also offer employment. Apart from this, Defence forces, local establishments and NGO’s also recruit qualified people from time to time.
