Who is a Radiologist?
Radiologists are physicians specializing in branch of medical science that uses radiation and radioactivity in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. They are the imaging experts and use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET scan), X-Ray and ultrasound etc to assist in treating patients.
After examining images, a radiologist will inform the patient’s primary physician of his or her findings and together they will decide on the best course of treatment. A radiologist correlates medical image findings with other examinations and tests, recommends further examinations or treatments, and confers with referring physicians.
Radiologists also treat diseases by means of radiation (radiation oncology or nuclear medicine) or minimally invasive, image-guided surgery (interventional radiology).
Diagnostic radiology involves various investigations or modalities like X Ray, sonography, CT scan, MRI, PET. After the investigations radiologists write their reports. These days Surgeons and Physicians use radiology reports and outputs before prescribing treatment.
Interventional radiology is comparatively a more recent development which deals with treatment using radiology techniques. Like removal of stones and radio therapy in Cancer treatment.

Some top colleges for Radiology in India are:
(1.) All India Institute of medical sciences, Delhi
(2.) Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram
(3.) Seth GS medical college [K. E. M. Hospital], Mumbai
(4.) Post Graduate Institute, Chandigarh
(5.) NIMHANS, Bangalore (DM in Neuroradiology)
(6.) Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University
(7.) Rajasthan University of Health Science, Jaipur
(8.) Moti Lal Nehru Medical College, Allahabad
Radiologists can join any hospitals, diagnostic centre or can have their own private practice. Teaching in medical college or related college is another good option. One can choose from various specialisations like cardiovascular radiology, Computed Tomography, Diagnostic Radiology, radiation oncology, paediatric radiology and others.
Ian Donald, Scottish physician, invented the ultrasound and tested it with pregnant lady.
Raymond Vahan Damadian, Medical practitioner and inventor, built the first commercial MRI scanner.
On a typical day a radiologists will be involved in imaging for many patients by appointment or sometimes the technicians take the images and radiologists look at them. Highly sophisticated machines are used and after the imaging for many patients the reports are created. The radiologists interpret the images and pass on the report to the physician or concerned surgeon. They have limited interaction with the patients (Not so for Interventional Radiologist) but are sometimes part of the meetings where many specialists decide for line of treatment for patients. Radiologists employed with big hospitals have other duties also to perform.
