These words from an ex-President of the United States, accurately tells about the political scenario in India today. No wonder youth today aspire to join politics to bring change. As they say you have to be in the system to change the system. Politician term is used for people who are politically active and are elected or nominated members of Parliament or are members of legislative assemblies of various states or local bodies.
In a democratic society, it is the people who are supposed to be the rulers themselves. However, to run the affairs of a country, state or a local body, it cannot be that all the citizens start participating in decision making and policy making. Hence the need to have representatives of people in the decision making bodies.
Those who wish to represent the people, raise the opinion of the represented people and participate in making decisions for the people of a country and society at large, should think about joining politics. Politicians take important decisions that range from the investments in the country to division of taxes and revenues earned by the government and much more. They influence public policy and decision making. They should enjoy being in lime light as their public and private lives are continuously under scrutiny.
There is no set qualification or course to become a politician in our country. But to be successful knowledge of political system (and thus course in political science and politics) and law etc can be use full (Thus course in law will also be good). Since politicians are involved in making decisions elated to many fields like investments, busineesses, governanace etc they need to be qualifications in various fields.
Many politicians have also come from families who have had their members in politics since some time. However, things are changing in the country and we do have examples of people having no family connections in politics also joining and doing well in politics.
One can begin by joining a local political party. During election times they need a lot people. One can display own skills and make a place for oneslf. This way one can slowly work one’s way upwards. The other way is through the Panchayat system. Another way is getting elected at the university level as president for youth wing of political party.
Some of the IAS officers also have joined politics after 6-8 years of service. Noted economists, social workers and lawyers also have joined politics.

Politics has to be seen more as a social and voluntary service. It should not be seen as a monetarily lucrative career. Unfortunately some politicians do indulge in practices that can get them windfall gains; however such practices are ethically and morally not correct.
