Who is a sculptor?
A sculptor is a person who practices the art of sculpture as a profession. They create and design 3D structures using clay, plastic, glass, paper fabric, various metals, wood, stone, ice etc.
Hard materials are generally carved with tools called chisels. Different kinds of chisels are used to carve away the stone, shape the forms, and finish the details. Depending on the materials used, a sculptor may also use techniques ranging from sewing to moulding to cutting. Sometimes they also use moulding, casting, welding and firing to get the desired structures. Sculpting as an art is not simple. It requires craftsmanship and expertise to use tools. It takes time and practice to carve out perfect structures.
Sculptors are usually self employed and may work part time sculpture and have another full time job. People with higher qualifications also take up teaching assignments at various levels. Sculpture have to market themselves and create a name for themselves. Usually one has to make a portfolio of the pictures of their sculptures and one may have website of one’s work. Sculptures usually try to get their work displayed in local artist’s galleries or museums. Many sculptors work long hours. One who perseveres and has a real passion and talent for original sculpting is the most likely to receive average or above average payment, as well as recognition, for his or her sculpture work.
Bachelor of Fine Arts (Sculpture) is usually a 4 year course, 10+2 students of any stream are eligible. Diploma in Painting is two years. At the post-graduation level the course offered is MFA. The duration of this course is two years. BFA pass students are eligible for MFA course. Many other short duration courses are also offered by universities and colleges all over India.
Unlike other professional courses, the fee for becoming a CA is very less, which is often inclusive of the cost of study material. The fee for CPT is approximately Rs.6700/- while that of IPCC is Rs.9000/-

Mostly sculptors work on assignment basis and thus earnings vary a lot depending on assignments. Famous scultors take a fee which may be even be a a few lakhs for one piece. People in teaching career can begin with Rs 3-4 Lakhs per year salary.
Dhruv Mistry – He gave way to amalgamation of standard market art with traditional art descending from the most primitive civilizations. His sculptures reconnoiter art in scores of media other than sculpture such as drawing, painting, etching and the like.
Anish Kapoor – He is distinguished for being a winner of Turner Prize. His sculptures have the power to capture the onlooker as they are mysteriously marvelous. His sculptures range between brilliantly colored and being monochromatic and are mostly simple forms.
Sadanand Bakre – He was amongst the most celebrated sculptors of India. He studied at the famous J. J. School of Art and was the winner of numerous awards here. He was amongst the founder members of the Progressive artists’ group immediately after independence of India. This artist has displayed his works of creativity in a lot of locations in America and Europe. He had also exhibited his artworks in 1961 at the Commonwealth Institute.
