Dietitians play an important role in maintaining health or people. Dietitians are experts in food and nutrition. They advise people on what to eat in order to lead a healthy lifestyle or achieve a specific health-related goal. Dietitians work in various different capacities in the field of healthcare, food service, corporate setting, and educational arenas.
Dietitians assess the client’s nutritional need and accordingly develop and implement the nutritional plans. Depending on the specialization they coordinate with nurses, doctors, hospital kitchen and food service staff.
Food service dietitians/nutritionists over see large-scale meal planning and preparation in health care facilities, company cafeterias, prisons and schools. On a typical day a management dietitian will plan and budget cyclic menus. Train and direct other dietitians and food service workers; enforce sanitary and safety regulations and prepare records & reports. Consultant dietitians/nutritionist work under contract with healthcare facilities or in their own private practice. Sports Dietitians help the sportsmen in maintaining proper health as per the requirements of sport that they play. Administrative Dietitians work as a part of the administrative body for health care in organizations such as schools, colleges, Hospitals, universities and even office canteens. They control the nutrient contents of the canteen food to maintain good hygiene of the organization members. Research Dietitians are mostly involved in research work by research and development organization.

There are also good salary scales with allowances and benefits in this profession. Girls and boys are both equally for the profession. The trainee dietitians get about Rs. 1.5 lakh to 3 lakhs per year. The regular employee dietitians get Rs. 3 lakhs to 4.8 lakhs per year depending upon the size of the organization they are working.
Dietitian is a very promising career. The students with post graduation degree in dietetics have huge job prospects in the medical field, in sports field and as an administrative dietitian. There are large number of government as well as private hospitals and nursing homes, big organisations, schools etc that require the services of dietitians.

George Eisman is considered one of the world’s foremost educators on vegetarian nutrition. He served as a faculty member in Dietetics and Nutrition at several universities and colleges and has worked in a children’s hospital and a nursing home, as well as for public health agencies in USA.
John A. McDougall, MD. has been studying, writing and “”speaking out”” about the effects of nutrition on disease for over 20 years. Dr. McDougall is the founder and medical director of the nationally renowned McDougall Program, a twelve day, live-in plan.
On a typical day a hospital based registered dietitian would review the medical record of a patient and would assess the nutritional requirements. As per the doctor’s advice would incorporate that in to the form of a soft diet or liquid diet or normal diet. They routinely interact with doctors and offer diet related advice.
